Executive search · US buyer's guide

Best resume and CV formatting software for executive search firms (USA, 2026)

Updated 9 October 2026 · Written by the Formatix AI team, London

US retained search firms rarely send a resume on its own. A typical engagement produces a position specification, a candidate slate for the search committee, confidential candidate reports and, for board searches, papers for the nominating and governance committee. Most resume formatting software was built for contingency recruiting and staffing, where the deliverable is a formatted resume attached to a submittal.

We compared two executive search CRMs that produce client reports themselves, two resume formatters built around Bullhorn, which many US staffing firms run on, and our own product. We make Formatix, so we have kept to what each vendor publishes and said where another tool is the better buy.

On Clockwork or Thrive TRM, try their built-in candidate reports first. Staffing desks on Bullhorn that need branded resumes for submittals should look at Candidately or iReformat. For assessment reports, board papers, PowerPoint slates or succession packs in your own templates, Formatix AI is built for that (charged in US dollars).

    1. Formatix AI

Best for: US search firms whose client deliverables go well beyond the resume

Formatix is a London-based platform that produces the documents a retained search is judged on, in your firm's existing template. Give it a candidate report, slate deck or one-page profile you already send clients, and it keeps your fonts, colors and layout.

For US buyers: plans are charged in US dollars at checkout, and candidate data is processed in the UK and EU under GDPR, not in the United States, and never used to train AI models. If a client contract requires US hosting, raise it first.

Formatix does not assess candidates or interpret psychometrics, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any psychometric publisher.

    • Assessment reports that lay in Hogan, SHL, Saville Wave or DISC results you already hold, with interview notes and ratings.
    • Board and CEO candidate reports for nominating and governance committees, and blind profiles for confidential searches.
    • Slate and shortlist decks: one PowerPoint slide per candidate with a matching Excel tracker.
    • Succession packs and 9-box grids for CHROs.
    • Longlists, market maps, and resumes in 40+ languages, including Spanish for Latin America searches.
    • Web app, email, API, JobAdder, ChatGPT and Claude; on Bullhorn, Loxo or Clockwork, ask Formatix how files move across.

Less suited to: staffing desks wanting resume formatting inside Bullhorn (Candidately, iReformat), firms that want clients working in a portal (Clockwork, Thrive TRM), or buyers needing US-dollar billing or US hosting.

    2. Clockwork

Best for: retained search firms that want client reports to come out of the search CRM

Clockwork Recruiting, founded in 2010 by a former executive recruiter, is search software built around what it calls the 8 Stages of executive search. Its FAQ describes a live client portal where clients follow progress and vote or comment on candidates, with free, unlimited client seats. You can also export candidate profiles, longlists and search reports as PDF, Word or spreadsheet files.

A read-only MCP server lets ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot read your Clockwork data, which Clockwork suggests for custom-branded reports in your template. Contracts run 12 months and there is no self-serve trial.

Less suited to: firms keeping their current CRM, or needing designed assessment reports and PowerPoint slates rather than CRM exports.

    3. Thrive TRM

Best for: search firms and in-house executive talent teams that want reports from their talent CRM

Thrive TRM is a talent relationship management system and ATS for search firms, in-house teams, and venture capital and private equity firms. Its blog describes a client portal and Search Summary Reports, built from fields you choose and branded with your firm's logo.

For in-house teams it describes PDF pre-read reports for CHRO and board meetings and a succession planning module.

Less suited to: firms wanting editable Word or PowerPoint deliverables (the pages we checked describe PDF), or not ready to change CRM.

    4. Candidately

Best for: US staffing agencies running on Bullhorn

Candidately describes itself as an AI layer that runs on top of Bullhorn: you sign in with your Bullhorn credentials and the sync starts in under five minutes. Its AI Resume Builder creates branded, anonymized resumes and cover sheets from Bullhorn fields, exported as PDF or back to Bullhorn.

The Resume Builder costs $1 per exported resume with unlimited users, billed annually.

Less suited to: firms not on Bullhorn, or retained search firms needing assessment reports, Word documents or PowerPoint slates.

    5. iReformat

Best for: staffing agencies standardizing resumes in volume on Bullhorn

iReformat, which operates under Recruiteze, is resume formatting software for staffing agencies. Its site says it converts resumes into the agency's template as Word or PDF, integrates with Bullhorn, is used by more than 600 agencies and is SOC 2 compliant.

Free trial without a card; custom quote by volume; unlimited users.

Less suited to: search documents beyond the resume, or buyers wanting a published price.

    • You already run searches in Clockwork or Thrive TRM: try their built-in exports first,, adding a document tool only if clients expect your own design.
    • You are a staffing or contingency desk on Bullhorn sending resumes with submittals: Candidately for a published $1 per resume, or iReformat for volume pricing.
    • You send search committees candidate reports, board papers, assessment reports or PowerPoint slates in your own template: Formatix AI.
    • You are an in-house talent team preparing CHRO succession reviews: Formatix AI for 9-box packs in your template, or Thrive TRM if you also want a talent CRM.

What is the best resume formatting software for executive search firms in the US?

It depends on your system and deliverables. Clockwork and Thrive TRM export candidate reports from the CRM; Candidately and iReformat serve Bullhorn staffing desks; RefineCV, Allsorter and HireAra also integrate with Bullhorn. For assessment reports, board and CEO reports, blind profiles, slate decks or succession packs in your own template, Formatix AI produces Word, PowerPoint, Excel and PDF.

Do US search firms say CV or resume?

Mostly resume for the candidate's document and candidate report or presentation for what goes to the client; CV persists in academic, medical and international searches. Formatix uses whatever headings your template uses.

Can our search CRM create candidate presentations, or do we need a separate tool?

Clockwork exports candidate profiles, longlists and search reports as PDF, Word or spreadsheet files, Thrive TRM sends Search Summary Reports branded with your logo and Loxo lists a Candidate Submittal Agent for client summaries. A separate tool earns its place when clients expect designed Word or PowerPoint documents or assessment reports.

What should US firms ask a vendor about candidate data privacy?

There is no single federal privacy law for candidate data, so ask every vendor where data is processed, how long files are kept, whether uploads train AI models, and how it handles state laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act, which has covered job applicants' data since 2023. Ask Formatix the same CCPA question.

How much does resume formatting software cost in the US?

RefineCV $0.40 per CV or $50 a month for 200; Candidately $1 per exported resume, billed annually; Formatix AI from US$25 a month for 20 credits, charged in US dollars, with 10 free trial credits valid for 14 days. iReformat, Clockwork and Thrive TRM quote.
